Biblical New Year is here

It’s official. Aviv (harvestable) barley was found throughout the land of Israel in multiple locations and the new moon was seen throughout the globe in numerous locations.

This is in fulfillment of the command:

Deuteronomy 16:1 – “Observe <8104, “Shamar”> the month of the Abib (Hebrew, ha Aviv), and keep the Passover to Yahweh your Mighty One, for in the month of the Abib (Hebrew, ha Aviv)Yahweh your Mighty One brought you out of Egypt by night.

Notice that the Hebrew is not giving the first year of the month a name. It’s saying to “shamar” the new moon (chodesh) of the Aviv.

The word Shamar is sometimes used to describe watching. For instance:

1 Samuel 19:11 – Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him <08104, “Shamar”> and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.”

Psalm 130:6 – My soul waits for Yahweh More than those who watch <08104, “Shamar”> for the morning– Yes, more than those who watch <08104, “Shamar”> for the morning.

1 Samuel 1:12 – And it happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli watched <08104, “Shamar”> her mouth.

So we are watching for the chodesh (new moon) in which there is Aviv (harvestable) barley in Israel to determine the new year. Barley is one of the most drought tolerant plants on the earth, and Israel is one of two places in the world that it grows in the wild, in case cultivated barley is not available.

There is no other scripture in the bible that tells us how to determine a new year. In order to come up with another option, one would need to add to the Torah–something Yahweh told Israel not to do.

So while it may seem unusual to use Israel’s barley harvest as the marker for the new year, I would encourage you to remember what Yahweh said about this very special land. Israel is:

Deuteronomy 11:12 –  “a land for which Yahweh your Elohim cares; the eyes of Yahweh your Elohim are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year.

It’s no wonder He cares for it. He told us to use the Aviv to determine the beginning of the year and the end of a year.

Pictures of this year’s harvest are attached. In spite of the common perception that Israel is nothing but rocky desert with sparse greenery, Israel is beautiful.

As someone who has studied this calendar issue for many years, and from may differing angles, I personally challenge the precepts outlined above. My study is based on “cycles” as this is a precedent YaHWaH has set throughout His Creation. For far too long, our western world has focused on a linear concept, yet a deeper understanding comes from looking at all creation in a cyclic way.

I have a 9 page short study which is available to anyone who wishes to study this matter from a cyclic vantage point. Let me just state here also; there is no Talmudic influence in my study, everything is based solidly in Scriptures and observations of the natural world as created.

A copy of that study can be had by e-mailing:

    1. Thank you for that brother. I posted because it was interesting that there are those who still go by the barley harvest. Seems there are several ways people try to determine the Feast days.
